Where Federal Prison Releases Go
No federal prison was identified in Clinton County. A local connection may come from a resident, a federal case, a temporary hold, or a Clinton County Jail handoff. Once the person enters BOP custody, the federal locator and federal records control the prison release. The county roster and Missouri Department of Corrections search do not track a federal prison term.
Departure from BOP can lead to the community, federal supervised release, another agency, or another sovereign’s custody. Supervised release is a federal court term served after prison; it is not continued imprisonment. Yet “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” proves only departure from BOP. It does not, without more, show that no state, local, immigration, or other federal authority held the person next.
| System | What its record can establish |
|---|---|
| Clinton County Sheriff | Local booking departure and a handoff to a federal custodian |
| BOP locator | Federal prison status and displayed release date |
| Federal court docket | Sentence and later supervised-release orders |
| BOP FOIA | Releasable historical movement and release detail |
| ICE or another authority | Custody that may follow BOP departure |
Search Federal Prison Release Records
The BOP Inmate Locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. A federal register number is the strongest search key. The locator also allows a name search with optional age, race, and sex filters. When a name is common, compare the register number and every displayed biographical field before treating the result as the same person.
- Choose the register-number search when a federal identifier is known.
- Otherwise enter the full name and use the available demographic filters.
- Open the matching result and record the name, number, age, race, and sex.
- Read the location or status together with the release date.
- Save the access date and confirm the next legal status through the docket or agency record.
The official BOP locator image shows the federal search route.
Its federal register-number and name fields should not be replaced by a Clinton County jail or MODOC search.
Read Federal Prison Release Results
A BOP result can display name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and a location or status. Transcribe the labels as displayed. A past date paired with “Released” is stronger than a future date. A future date is projected and may change. “Not in BOP Custody” needs context because it can reflect release, transfer, or a person outside the locator’s covered record.
| Locator field | Careful reading |
|---|---|
| Register number | Federal identifier used to separate same-name people |
| Release date | Past may document departure; future is projected |
| Released | Departure from BOP custody, not the end of all authority |
| Not in BOP Custody | Requires a record or docket check for the reason |
| Location | Read with status because labels can change |
BOP warns that projected dates can change as sentence credits are recalculated, including First Step Act calculations. Do not turn a future date into proof of completed release. The exact court judgment, sentence credits, later orders, and BOP calculations control.
Confirm Federal Prison Release Status
Use two records when the destination matters. The BOP locator establishes the displayed federal prison status. The federal docket can show the sentence and supervised-release term. A probation office record may confirm that supervision is active, subject to federal disclosure rules. If another sovereign took custody, that receiving authority’s record is needed.
For a Clinton County starting point, call the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office at 816-539-2156 or request the booking disposition. Ask whether the person was released locally or delivered to USMS, BOP, ICE, another county, or MODOC. The sheriff-linked current portal is only a present local-custody check. A missing name does not establish a federal release.
Missouri Case.net covers state cases, not the federal criminal docket. It can still explain a separate Clinton County charge or state hold. Keep the cases apart. Match register number, case number, name, birth information, and dates before combining events.
Obtain Federal Prison Release Records
Use BOP FOIA when the locator does not show enough historical detail. Identify the person by full name, date of birth or other birth detail, and federal register number when known. State the record sought, such as releasable movement history, release date and type, releasing institution, and destination category. A narrow request is easier to locate than a broad request for every federal file.
Federal law and policy can limit personal, security, medical, treatment, investigative, and other protected material. Ask for segregable portions, which means the open parts that can be separated from closed content. If the concern began at Clinton County Jail, separately use the Clinton County Sunshine route to request the local transfer event from the sheriff. BOP cannot create the county booking record, and the sheriff cannot create the later federal prison release record.

Keep the locator capture date with any FOIA response. A later database update can change a projected value or status label.
Federal Prison Release Dates Change
A future BOP locator date is a projection, not a completed release event. Federal sentence credits and lawful recalculations can move it. BOP specifically warns that First Step Act credit calculations may affect the displayed value. New court action, loss or restoration of credit, another sentence, and a detainer can also change the path. Record the exact date label and the day the locator was checked. Do not rename a future date as an actual release date.
A past release date also needs its status. Pair the date with “Released,” “Not in BOP Custody,” or the location wording that appears beside it. If the result is unclear, BOP FOIA can provide releasable history, and the federal docket can show the judgment and later court orders. The docket may establish legal authority for release, but a BOP record is the better source for the prison system’s physical departure.
Supervised release should not be confused with a projected prison date. It is imposed by the federal court and generally follows imprisonment. A person can be released from BOP and still have reporting duties, conditions, or later revocation proceedings. Likewise, a person delivered to a state or immigration custodian has left BOP but has not entered the community. Ask one direct question after reading the locator: which authority, if any, had custody or supervision next?
USMS Is Not BOP Release
The U.S. Marshals Service commonly manages federal pretrial detention and moves people through state, local, private, and federal contract space. A Clinton County Jail departure on a federal writ or detainer may therefore lead to USMS custody without any immediate BOP record. After conviction and designation, USMS may deliver the person to BOP. These are stages, not interchangeable names for one database.
USMS has no public released-person locator comparable to BOP. It also limits specified prisoner details, photographs, and arrival or departure times. Use the federal court docket, the lawful record of the holding facility, and the BOP locator if a prison commitment followed. If the person was acquitted or released before BOP commitment, the docket and holding-facility record may be the more direct proof.
Note: A federal writ can move a person for court while the original custodian keeps legal authority, so the movement itself is not release.
Separate Clinton County Release Systems
Use the source that owns the custody event. Clinton County Jail records show local booking release or transfer. MODOC’s active search shows state prisoners and people still under state supervision, while its historical file covers fully discharged state cases. BOP covers federal prison custody. ICE covers immigration detention. MOVANS is a Missouri notification tool and does not replace a federal locator.
- Federal prison release
- Departure from BOP custody, sometimes followed by federal supervised release.
- County transfer
- Closure of a local booking because another authority accepted custody.
- Supervised release
- A federal court term in the community after imprisonment.
- Full discharge
- The end of the relevant authority, which is not always the same day as prison departure.
A clear federal release history can require three linked records: the Clinton County handoff, the BOP prison result, and the federal docket’s post-prison terms. Preserve each agency’s wording and date rather than collapsing them into one generic release.
Keep each source date with the result. A county portal changes as bookings close, a projected BOP date may be recalculated, and a docket can gain a later order. A dated copy makes the sequence reviewable. When two sources conflict, ask the agency that created the disputed event instead of choosing the result that appears newest.
